Noni is a fruit-bearing tree in the coffee family, Rubiaceae. It is native to Southeast Asia and Australasia, and there are over 100 names for its fruit across different regions. These include Great Morinda, Indian Mulberry, Beach Mulberry, Vomit Fruit, Awl Tree, Rotten Cheese Fruit, and others.
The Noni tree has historically been considered a life-giving tree, as its fruits, leaves and bark have many benefits. It has been promoted as a dietary supplement for preventing cancer, infections, treating high blood pressure and helping with other conditions. Its fruits are a source of potassium, vitamin C, antioxidants and contain other nutrients such as vitamin E, biotin, phosphorus, iron and magnesium.
A unique trait of noni trees is that the fruits appear before the flowers. Small, white flowers bloom from brown spots on the hard unripe fruit, each fruit bearing between 50 and 75 flowers. After the flowers fall, the fruit ripen, changing in color and flavor. The fruits have a strong pungent smell when they are ripe, often resembling smelly cheese or horseradish and overripe fruits. The flesh and juice have this scent and a bitter, sharp and tangy flavor.
